What does "ECLECTIC" mean?
The word Eclectic comes from the Eclectic Physicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These innovative healers believed in choosing the best of all healing traditions — drawing from herbal medicine, folk wisdom, and emerging medical science. They championed the whole plant, the whole person, and the power of nature as medicine.
Eclectic Herb carries this spirit forward, blending tradition and innovation to honor herbs in their purest form.

Our Roots
Founded in 1982 at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, Eclectic Herb was born from the same philosophy: that plants, preserved whole, could transform the future of natural medicine. From the beginning, we did things differently — pioneering freeze-drying, becoming one of the first herb farms certified organic by Oregon Tilth, and setting standards that honored both people and planet.

Innovation with Integrity
Innovation has always been at the heart of Eclectic Herb. Our founder, Dr. Ed Alstat, introduced freeze-drying to herbalism, preserving delicate compounds that heat destroys. Today, this commitment continues — keeping herbs whole, pure, and alive, just as they grow in the field.

Evolving with the Plants
Rooted in its pioneering past yet always evolving, Eclectic Herb remains guided by the same principles that shaped its beginnings — respect for nature, devotion to purity, and belief in the whole plant. Today, the legacy continues to flourish, woman-owned and ever inspired by the rhythm of the Earth.
The Eclectic Way
To honor the plant is to honor the Earth. That is what it means to be truly Eclectic.
