Some of the most powerful plant medicine on Earth grows right at your feet. Most people walk past it without a second glance. Robert Dale Rogers has spent a lifetime paying attention to exactly those things.
With over 65 books, a degree in botany, and decades of teaching and clinical practice, Robert joins Chris and Mel for a conversation that ranges from the forests of the Pacific Northwest to the Alberta prairie, from ancient Cree healing traditions to the cutting edge of lichen research.
The Medicine in the Forest Floor
Robert's deep interest in lichen medicine grew from years of clinical work with Usnea, one of the most recognizable lichens in temperate rainforests. Compounds found in lichens, including usnic acid, have been studied for their ability to affect bacterial cell function in ways that differ from conventional approaches, and Robert shares what that looked like in his practice over 18 years.
Lungwort lichen is another standout from this conversation. Thriving in the same moist forests many of us call home, Lungwort has a long history of traditional use for respiratory support and has been part of food and medicine in Iceland for centuries.
Wisdom Rooted in Place
Early in his practice, Robert was fortunate to learn from two indigenous healers living near him in Northern Alberta. Those relationships opened 20 years of research into indigenous plant traditions across the region.
Later, as a clinical professor at the University of Alberta, Robert helped gather 32 indigenous healers from across North America, respectfully inviting them to share their knowledge. Thirty of the thirty-two declined.
One who said yes was Russell Wheeler, a Cree healer who shared a 10th-generation medicine bundle: 62 herbal combinations passed down through oral tradition, memorized by the oldest son of each generation. Russell passed away not long after. The knowledge made it out. Robert is grateful every day for that.
Flower Essences, Mushroom Essences, and the Work of Hope
Robert used flower essences throughout his clinical years, particularly with patients who arrived feeling like they had run out of options. The Bach flower essence Gorse, traditionally used to support those experiencing hopelessness, came up again and again as a powerful part of his work.
From there, he spent 26 years developing a line of mushroom essences, working closely with clients to understand how each one functioned. These essences are oriented toward depth work and inner shifts, the kind that sometimes need to happen before anything else can change.
Not All Lavender Is Created Equal
Robert shared how France exports eight times the lavender it actually produces. Most of what reaches North American shelves has been blended with a hybrid variety to meet market specifications. Robert and his wife Laurie run Scents of Wonder essential oils, and the difference between genuine and adulterated oil is something Chris experienced firsthand at a conference, where Robert's lavender oil knocked her out cold in a loud hotel. It was potent like no other lavender she'd experienced.
