In Season: Calendula & the Glow of High Summer

This is one of our favorite herbs here at Eclectic! Few plants capture the golden warmth of the season quite like Calendula (Calendula officinalis). With its vibrant orange and yellow petals, this cheerful flower thrives under the summer sun—bursting into bloom just when the days are longest. Often called “sunshine in a flower,” Calendula has long been harvested during midsummer for its powerful yet gentle healing properties.

A Little History: The Golden Healer

Calendula has been well-loved for centuries in many cultures as a plant of warmth, renewal, and protection. Its name comes from the Latin calendae, meaning “the first day of the month,” reflecting its near year-round blooming in warmer climates. In ancient Rome and medieval Europe, Calendula was a symbol of the sun—used in healing salves, food, and spiritual rituals.

Early herbalists turned to Calendula for wounds that wouldn’t heal, inflamed tissues, and stagnant lymph. Bright petals were steeped in oils or teas to soothe the skin, reduce swelling, and move stuck energy. It was also used in charms and garlands to offer protection and bring joy—often planted near doorways to invite good energy and drive out negativity.

Folk traditions believed Calendula followed the sun, and that its vibrant color captured solar power—offering both physical and emotional light in times of need. Today, it remains a go-to herb for gentle, effective healing—from soothing skin irritation to supporting the body's detox pathways.

Modern Uses: For Skin, Lymph, and Gentle Healing

Calendula is more than just a pretty flower—it’s one of herbalism’s most beloved remedies for supporting the skin, soothing inflammation, and gently moving the lymph. Its golden blooms offer both external and internal support, making it a staple for everyday care and seasonal cleansing.

  • Lymphatic & Detox Support
Calendula gently stimulates the lymphatic system, encouraging healthy flow and helping the body clear waste and stagnation. Herbalists often turn to it as part of detox blends or to support tissue healing and immune recovery.* It’s especially helpful for swollen lymph nodes, sluggish circulation, or skin issues linked to internal congestion.

  • Topical Healing for Skin & Tissue
With its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, Calendula is a go-to for minor cuts, scrapes, rashes, insect bites, and sun-exposed skin. Infused oils and salves made from fresh or freeze-dried flowers are prized for calming irritation, speeding up wound repair, and supporting tissue regeneration. Calendula is also a gentle choice for baby skin and sensitive areas.*

  • Soothing Internal Support
Calendula isn’t just for the outside. It can help calm inflamed tissues in the gut and support healing from the inside out. It’s a favorite among herbalists for addressing mild digestive discomfort, uterine stagnation, or as part of a formula to promote gentle cleansing during seasonal transitions.*

Calendula’s strength lies in its softness—offering radiant, sun-infused support that helps the body heal with grace. When harvested at peak bloom and freeze-dried fresh, like ours at Eclectic Herb, it retains its full color, vibrancy, and healing potential.

How We Preserve Its Power

Calendula’s healing magic is delicate—its vibrant color, resin-rich petals, and active compounds can degrade quickly with heat or prolonged drying. In fact, herbal texts and modern practitioners alike note that Calendula is most effective when used fresh —or preserved in a way that captures its fresh state.

That’s why we freeze-dry our Calendula immediately after harvest. Our gentle, chemical-free process locks in the full vitality of the living flower—preserving its golden color, signature aroma, and complete range of bioactive compounds.

Unlike heat-dried versions that often appear dull or brown, our freeze-dried Calendula retains the brilliance and potency of just-picked blooms. You won’t find any fillers, powders, or diluted extracts—just pure Calendula, as nature intended.

We protect the plant’s light—so you can experience its full-spectrum support, inside and out.

How to Grow Calendula: Sunshine Made Simple

Growing Tips (This is a super easy plant to grow!)

Calendula is one of the easiest herbs to grow—and one of the most rewarding. Whether you’re planting in a garden bed, a raised box, or a sunny pot on your porch, this cheerful flower doesn’t ask for much but gives so much in return.

Start with the Seeds
Calendula seeds are large, crescent-shaped, and easy to handle—perfect for beginner gardeners. Sow them directly into the soil in early spring after the last frost, or start indoors a few weeks earlier for a head start.

Sun, Soil, and Water
Choose a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. Calendula isn’t too fussy—it can handle poor soils and still thrive. Water regularly but don’t overdo it; the roots prefer to stay on the dry side between soakings.

Keep It Blooming
Calendula loves to be picked! The more you harvest the flowers, the more it blooms. Snip blossoms every few days to encourage new growth and prevent the plant from going to seed too early.

A Tip for Potency
Harvest flowers in the morning, after the dew has dried, and choose the freshest, most vibrant blooms. These are the most resin-rich and medicinal—perfect for drying, infusing, or making herbal remedies.

Bonus: Calendula also attracts pollinators, repels pests like aphids, and makes a beautiful companion plant in your veggie garden.

From Bloom to Bottle: Ways to Use Calendula

Calendula petals are super potent. Once harvested, there are so many ways to bring this herb’s healing magic into your daily life. Whether you're making simple home remedies or crafting high-quality herbal products, Calendula is as versatile as it is beautiful.

1. Infused Oils & Salves
Steep dried (or freeze-dried) Calendula petals in a carrier oil like olive, jojoba, or almond using the low-and-slow method (in a sunny window for 2–3 weeks or in a warm double boiler for a few hours). Strain and use the oil directly, or turn it into a soothing salve for cuts, scrapes, burns, or dry skin.

2. Herbal Teas & Tinctures
Calendula can be taken internally to support lymphatic flow, digestive inflammation, and tissue repair. Infuse 1–2 teaspoons of flowers in hot water for 10 minutes, or use a properly prepared tincture under the guidance of an herbalist.

3. Skin Rinses & Baths
Add a handful of Calendula flowers to your bath or make a strong infusion to use as a rinse for irritated skin, minor wounds, or as a postpartum sitz bath. Its gentle, anti-inflammatory properties make it a favorite for sensitive skin and children.

4. Culinary Touches
While more medicinal than culinary, Calendula petals can be used sparingly in salads, rice dishes, or as a vibrant garnish. They’ve earned the nickname “poor man’s saffron” for their golden hue.

5. Fresh Flower Compresses
Crush fresh or rehydrated freeze-dried flowers into a poultice and apply directly to inflamed or irritated skin. This traditional remedy is especially helpful for soothing rashes, insect bites, and minor burns.

Herbal Energetics & Planetary Vibes

Calendula is gently warming, slightly drying, and energetically uplifting—making it a classic herb for healing wounds, both physical and emotional. It’s a flower of restoration, moving stagnant energy and supporting renewal from the inside out. Calendula is especially helpful when we feel stuck, sluggish, or in need of gentle cleansing and light.

In herbal energetics, it supports the lymphatic system, skin, digestive tract, and solar plexus —bringing clarity, flow, and resilience to the spaces where we hold emotion, tension, and stress.

Astrologically, Calendula resonates with the Sun and Leo, just like its golden color suggests. In some traditions, it's also linked to Venus for its soothing, beautifying, and nurturing qualities.

☀️ The Sun rules over vitality, joy, and personal expression—echoing Calendula’s radiant energy and its traditional use to restore brightness in times of dullness or fatigue.

💛 Leo, ruled by the Sun, mirrors Calendula’s bold presence and heart-centered nature. Both invite us to bloom fully, take up space, and share our light with the world.

♀️ Venus connects Calendula to beauty, harmony, and skin health—reflecting its use in soothing inflammation and promoting softness, both physically and emotionally.

This golden flower reminds us to stand in our strength with gentleness, to heal without harshness, and to glow from the inside out. Like sunlight captured in a petal, Calendula is a quiet force for resilience, warmth, and renewal.
